They use palm leaves as protection instead

To celebrate Mother’s Day this year, Waitrose has launched two wrap-free bouquets as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce waste and eliminate single-use plastic.

Instead of the cellophane you'd usually find holding your bunch, these pretty rose and lily bouquets are instead carefully wrapped in a layer of Fatsia palm leaves. The rubber band has also been replaced with reusable natural twine and even the flower food's packaging has been swapped for a paper-based recyclable alternative.

Waitrose's head florist, Chris Wood, says: “We’ve removed the single-use plastic on these two new bouquets and instead, used Fatsia leaves and other foliages such as palm leaves to protect the flowers, rather than cellophane wrap.

"We’ve seen a growing trend for florals in varying shades of pinks and purples which both of these bouquets feature, and either would make a beautiful gift and lovely surprise for a special someone.”

The supermarket has already made some commitments to ensuring the sustainability of its blooms – all packaging, both in shops and online, is recyclable and it aims to make all its own-brand packaging either widely-recycled, reusable or home compostable by 2023.

Waitrose has also ranked first two years in a row in Greenpeace's plastic footprint league of UK supermarkets.

You can preorder both of these bunches on the Waitrose Florist site now, so you can tick getting your blooms sorted off your list in good time for Mother’s Day.
