The Queen's former footman has revealed the shocking secret of which side the Queen takes in a row which has bitterly divided her subjects for centuries. Steven Scott Kaye has told how Her Majesty eats her scones.

He has also revealed the old fashioned dish she always has with afternoon tea to try and help those who want to stick her rules when hosting jubilee parties over the weekend. Mr Scott Kaye is in the know because he performed a range of duties at all the royal residences.

Footmen don't just stand on a coach in sitting on carriage processions. They have to know how to meet exacting royal standards when laying the table, serving afternoon tea, valeting and even walking the Queen’s Corgis.

So he is well placed to step into the row between Cornwall and Devon who have been warring for years about how to eat a scone. Cornwall favours jam first and clotted cream second. Devon the other way round.

For decades they have argued about which formula produces the best flavour in a traditional British cream tea. But with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee street parties approaching this weekend, the etiquette commentator has revealed how royal fans need to eat their scones if they want to follow the monarch.

"Cream teas have been served since the 11th century and are still a hot topic of conversation. But for her majesty it’s cream first!," he said revealing Her Majesty prefers the Devonian method.

The footman who also boasts the title of Knight of the Order of Independence of Jordan has let bakers Birds in on a few royal secrets to help those hosting parties over the weekend. It's the kind of thing that not many people know because photographers are banned from picturing her eating.

“Cucumber sandwiches are one of the Queen’s favourites, as are jam sandwiches on white bread cut into small circles," he said.

"The late Duke of Edinburgh loved Battenberg cake, which was originally created as a wedding gift for Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria to pay tribute to England's newest member of the royal family.”

And he added: "Her Majesty always has a carton of potted shrimps on her afternoon tea table."

Mike Holling, sales and marketing director at Birds said the jubilee range which includes shortbread corgis and classic scones have been flying off the shelves in the run up to the long bank holiday weekend.

He said: “It’s been great to partner with Steven to bring some royal tips to our customers for Jubilee week. It’s set to be an amazing week and one where the whole country comes together to celebrate Her Majesty and her years of service. "
