From the stylised St Edward's Crown to the elegant Perpetua font...

What do the colours of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee logo mean? This year, Queen Elizabeth II celebrates 70 years on the throne, and to mark the occasion is a new emblem featuring a stylised crown incorporating the number 70, symbolising the monarch's special milestone.

The design for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee logo is based on an original illustration drawn by Edward Roberts, a 19-year-old graphic design student from Nottinghamshire, studying at Leeds University.

Run in conjunction with the V&A Museum, young creatives were challenged to encapsulate the Queen's 70-year reign with their artistic skills, and it was Edward's winning design – a platinum line reflecting The Queen's continuous service – that was chosen by a judging panel of industry experts, including graphic designers, visual artists, design professionals, and a representative from the Royal Household.

You'll easily spot the official emblem used across community and national events, publications, social media, retail and merchandising.

The logo features a purple and platinum design. The continuous platinum line reveals a stylised St Edward's Crown within a circle to create the impression of a royal seal, and the number 70 has been incorporated within the top of the crown signifying the Platinum Jubilee.

'For my design, I wanted to give a modern twist to the iconic elements of St Edward's Crown, and so I created a continuous line, which I felt was a fitting representation of the Queen's reign,' Edward said.

The elegant font is Perpetua, which means forever, acknowledging the first British Monarch ever to mark 70 years on the throne. It also reflects the font style that appeared on Her Majesty's Coronation Order of Service in 1953.

Two colours make up the Queen's Platinum Jubilee logo – platinum and Pantone 3515 C. In consultation with the Royal Collection Trust, the purple used in the logo is the shade which most closely corresponds to the purple in the Queen's Robe of Estate and Coronation Gown.

Platinum is a whitish, silvery-grey hue. In its physical form, platinum is a heavy and precious metal often used to make jewellery, amongst other things, and is a symbol of true love, purity, and strength. The platinum colour represents Her Majesty's 70 years on the throne.

There are many variations of the colour purple, which is formed from a mixture of blue and red. From lilac to mulberry, these varying purple hues convey different meanings. Pantone 3515 C is described as a dark shade of magenta. Generally speaking, purple is a bold and commanding colour, synonymous with royalty, wealth, luxury, loyalty and dignity.
