Green matter: Are there any special moments that motivate you to start living more sustainably?

Emma Roberts: Since I became a mom, I have paid more and more attention to the things I brought into my home and the products we use in it. This opened my eyes to how much trash my family generates every day.

Since working with Grove for Plastic Free last summer, I have learned that no matter how much plastic we put in the trash can, only 9% of the plastic is actually recycled. This surprised me, and since then I have been more involved in choosing the option that does not contain single-use plastics.

GM: Why is taking care of the earth important to you?

ER: I want to do my best to make the earth a better place, especially for the next generation. I think making small changes over time can make a big difference.

GM: What are your specific sustainable living habits at home, on the go or on the set?

ER: I choose cleaning products that do not use harsh chemicals. I like to use Grove Co. Multi Purpose Cleaning Concentrate with a reusable glass spray bottle. They are plant-based formulas, do not contain harsh chemicals, and do not contain disposable plastics. They also have amazing scents, such as apple and pear blossoms, which make my house smell incredible.

I like to take my Grove Co. silicone straws to work every day, so that I don’t have to rely on plastic straws, and I will try to pack lunches when preparing lunch, so that I can avoid using plastic takeaway containers.

I have been to many holiday parties, where disposable products are preferred, usually made of plastic, and these products are shipped to landfills. When I host, I like to use reusable plates, glassware, tablecloths, napkins and straws. When I really need to use disposable items, I choose biodegradable and compostable things.

GM: What advice do you have for people who want to live more sustainably?

ER: Buy a local one. I try to shop locally, and I know this can help reduce my carbon footprint. I buy all my organic products at the local farmer’s market, and I also like to support these small businesses. Not only does it taste much better, it is also better for the environment.

GM: How did giving birth and being a mother change your view of life?

ER: Like I said, as a new mother, I started to pay more attention to the products I use for myself and my family. One of the things I started was to collect decorations for each holiday and reuse them every year. Apart from buying a few new candles and some fresh flowers for the table setting, I like this because nothing will be thrown into the trash can.

GM: What is the biggest misconception you have found about sustainable living?

ER: It doesn't have to be overwhelming. You can make small changes every day, which will make a big difference over time. Holidays are a good time to start making more sustainable choices.

GM: In what ways will you reduce the impact of this holiday?

ER: I have always considered myself a considerate gift giver, but this year I tried to pay more attention to the gifts I buy. I like to give people gifts or get amazing antique discoveries, and then give them to a friend I know or my mom, I know they will like it. All this in small steps day after day!

I am a big candle person, so I like to use clean burning candles to create a festive atmosphere. They are a great way to zoom in on any desktop while also making any room smell great.
